Sustainability

Do good, sleep well

Anker Hotel is a part of the Anker Foundation. Our story started in the early 1970s with an important mission – to improve the student housing conditions in Oslo.
To this day we fulfill our purpose and continue to create affordable housing that students can call home.
We continuously work on creating better living conditions, working conditions for our employees  and contribute to positive change in our local areas.

Sustainability at Anker Hotel

Eco Lighthouse Certified

At Anker Hotel, we are proud to be certified as an Eco-Lighthouse! This certification is a commitment to working systematically with sustainable initiatives. It marks an important step in reducing our environmental footprint and contributing to a greener future.

Waste Management

Our waste and material management aims to contribute to recycling and positive environmental effects in both ongoing operations and projects. We have set a goal that at least 90% of waste in our own projects is sorted, and that the sorting rate in ongoing operations is at a minimum of 70%.

In 2024, we invested in a new, modern environmental station that allows us to handle and sort waste more efficiently and sustainably. In daily operations, we use the REEN control system to register and report waste and food waste, providing valuable insights and enabling continuous improvement.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we have also partnered with Gateteam Oslo, which collects lost and found clothing. The clothing is then given new life through charitable purposes, contributing to reducing waste.

Energy

At Anker Hotel, we are actively working to reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint both in our ongoing management and in our projects. Our goal is to reduce energy consumption by 40% by 2035. To achieve this, we have implemented various measures to monitor and understand our energy use.

One of the most important actions we take is the implementation of monitoring systems in all hotel rooms, which ensures control and management of energy use in our daily operations. This is a key part of our long-term strategy to contribute to a sustainable environment.

Water

We aim to annually reduce our water consumption as part of our sustainable efforts to minimize environmental impact.
Since 2023, we have been using district heating for the heating of hot water to reduce our CO2 emissions.

To meet our goals for reduced water consumption, we rely on our guests to contribute by reusing towels and choosing our “Green Stay” option. By selecting “Green Stay,” guests have the opportunity to avoid unnecessary washing, thereby helping reduce water, resource, and chemical use.

One of our most important initiatives in 2025 is to install water meters throughout the hotel. This will enable better monitoring and control, allowing for further improvements in our water usage.

Sustainable suppliers

In our daily operations and projects, we set clear expectations for our suppliers and partners. This is a crucial part of our ability to influence sustainable collaboration. We aim for all of our suppliers and partners to be certified with a third-party environmental management system and for our project service providers to meet our requirements according to the Oslo Model.

To ensure continuous improvement, we collect annual data on key suppliers, products, and our chemical use. To reduce our environmental impact, we actively implement measures to reduce single-use items and chemicals that are not eco-certified.

How can you, as a guest, contribute?

Your involvement is vital in creating a greener future together:

Green Stay

By choosing a green stay, you help reduce our carbon footprint. The housekeeping department does not clean your room or change towels during your stay, which saves water and energy. We use eco-certified cleaning products, and reduced cleaning minimizes the use of chemicals, benefiting both the environment and our staff. Thank you for supporting our work toward a more sustainable future.

Green Conferences

When our guests book a conference with us, they have the option to host it as a “Green Conference.” This means that paper, single-use items, and other promotional materials are minimized during the event. The food and beverage selection throughout the conference will consist of organic and locally sourced products, as well as a wide variety of meat-free options.

Food Waste

As our guest, you are our most important partner in minimizing food waste. To monitor and control food waste, we have implemented REEN Control, which weighs and reports both our own and our guests’ waste. We work to communicate this clearly so that everyone remembers to serve themselves responsibly during our buffet offerings and understands how valuable it is when everyone contributes to waste reduction.

Travel green

Our unique location makes it easy to make sustainable travel choices, and we encourage all our guests to explore the city on foot or to use the city’s public transportation. The city’s trams and subways are emission-free and run on certified renewable electricity. You can also travel affordably and environmentally friendly in Oslo with Oslo City Bike.

By choosing Anker Hotel you contribute to our mission – to offer students a safe and affordable place to live.
